I am here to ruffle feathers.
The reason people say, “you cannot be autistic because you make eye contact or can talk.” is that they rather autistics stay silent about what happens to them when people think they cannot speak for themselves.
It’s like having a pet and one day, it starts talking back to you in your own language. Like “you’re not supposed to do that from the role that was assigned to you?”
Can you imagine one day, your dog speaking to you plainly, “I saw that post of me online that you put up and I didn’t approve. Can you please take that down?”
So when a person is not staying silent and is speaking up for themselves, instead of thinking both can be true and upgrading the rigid mental model, you think this cannot be autism.
But people rather keep that distance away from the actual person—and autism once the label is applied while that person is speaking or communicating for themselves. It just makes things easier. Easier for who?
